The course has the objective of providing general knowledge on innovation and product design and development processes. The course mainly associates a managerial perspective, aimed at making the doctoral student capable of understanding the innovation process, to the more traditional perspective on design methods. It also provides indications on the main current research questions and on the work being carried out by researchers in the field.
Innovation Management
The course sees as a prerequisite the Innovation Management teaching proposed in the transversal skills offer of the University. The course is essentially made of two parts: a former part that gives the foundation for managing innovative processes and a latter part that focuses on product development and design processes. Part 1- Elements of economics of innovation and innovation strategy, which are aimed at the management of innovation processes Part 2- The product development process and its management issues. Design processes and design methods. The role of ICT support to product development processes Part 1- The relationship between innovation and the different strategic approaches (product portfolio management, the competitive advantage theory according to Porter, Resource-based theory). Product diffusion models. Patent scanning and product planning for requirement analysis. Part 2- The product development process and its management issues. Qualitative and quantitative approaches for need identification. Requirement analysis. Design methods (i.e. Functional Analysis, product architecture design methods, Biomimicry, TRIZ, concept selection methods. Value Engineering). Project management in the new product development field (planning, scheduling and DSM methods).
