The proposed excellence course will take advantage of the extremely solid experience of Dr. Valey developed 15 years activity as leader of the submarine network at Google. PhD Course will provide a deep dive into submarine networks, cable ships, marine equipment in addition to topics of optical transmission studied during regular electrical engineering program. The lectures also review cable network topologies management and powering of submarine cables. A special attention will be paid to environmental surveillance through advance optical sensing. We will review the latest development in state of polarization sensing and optical interferometry. Conversion of submarine cables into dual polarization coherent array of sensor provides a unique opportunity to enable environmental sensing in deep oceans, where scientific instruments are sporadic. Tsunami monitoring and early warning based on live detection of tsunami wave in the open ocean is one attractive target of future research. Also earthquake early warning will be demonstrated and data analysis techniques will be evaluated during the course. Lecture course will include active participation in the special discussion sessions. We will also provide several special chapters dedicated to industrial practices : submarine system planning, system deployment, hybrid subsea and energy cables. If time permits, lectures on submerged plant equipment, cable and fiber will be delivered

GUEST LECTURE Valey Kamalov. PhD Academic Life MSc degree in physics 1978, and the PhD degree in quantum electronics in 1982, both from Physics Department Moscow State Lomonosov University Teaching and conducting research in the field of nonlinear optical spectroscopy at Moscow State Lomonosov University, 1982 - 1988. Conducting research on picosecond / femtosecond time resolved nonlinear spectroscopy, 1988-1991, for which I earned Sc.D. from Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Chemical Physics in 1992. 2023: Started a company dedicated to i) education in the area of Subsea Optical Fiber Communication and ii) tsunami early warning based on operational submarine cables. During Q1-Q2’ 2023 conducted training at Wits University, Johannesburg, and Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and at Paratus, Namibia, Africa. Submitted several papers dedicated to seismology with fiber optical cables, see list of recent publications below. 2023 - 2007: Principal Network Engineer, Google LLC The course will cover the following topics. - Introduction to Submarine Networks - Cable Ships and Marine Equipment - Submarine optical Transmission - System Deployment and Life of the Cable - Evolution of Submarine Networks and Technology - Marine Projects - Cables and Fibers - Cable Powering - Networks Topologies and Supervisory and Tools - System Deployment and Life of the Cable. Life of a Permit/Government Relationship - Network Topologies and Submarine Terminals and Upgrades - Using submarine for environmental surveillance: Subsea Earthquake and Tsunami Network, other applications?
