L'Intelligenza Artificiale (AI) sta diventando sempre più presente e integrata nella nostra vita quotidiana, con soluzioni complesse e spesso imprevedibili. Questa complessità e imprevedibilità rende difficile per gli utenti capire, fidarsi e adottare con successo tali soluzioni. Il corso vuole introdurre metodologie e tecniche per progettare e sviluppare sistemi interattivi e intelligenti che siano usabili e utili per tutti, riflettendo anche sull’impatto che l'adozione dell'AI ha e avrà sui loro utenti. Una combinazione di lezioni e sessioni pratiche introdurrà gli studenti a varie tecniche utili per la creazione di tali sistemi intelligenti in alcuni domini selezionati.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly present and integrated in our daily lives, with complex and often unpredictable solutions. This complexity and unpredictability make it difficult for users to understand, trust, and adopt such solutions with success. The course aims at introducing methodologies and techniques to design and build intelligent interactive systems that are usable and useful for all, also reflecting on the impact that AI applications have and will have on their users. A combination of lectures and workshop-style sessions will introduce students to different techniques for creating such intelligent systems across a few selected domains.

Il corso sarà organizzato in cinque moduli, alternando lezioni frontali a sessioni pratiche di lavoro di gruppo e individuale:
1. Introduzione a Human-AI Interaction.
2. Trade-off in Human-AI Interaction: aumentare o rimpiazzare le capacità delle persone? Manipolazione diretta o agenti intelligenti? Discussione tramite panel.
3. Progettare e valutare sistemi di AI centrati sull'utente: linee guida e metodi; dati, bias e trust. Design workshop.
4. Paradigmi per Human-AI Interaction: interfacce intelligenti, agenti conversazionali e chatbot.
5. Sessione pratica: prototipazione di un agente conversazionale. Presentazione dei prototipi realizzati.
The course will be organized in five modules, mixing lectures, hands-on and workshop-style sessions:
1. Introduction to Human-AI Interaction.
2. Trade-offs in Human-AI Interaction: Augmenting or replacing people? Direct manipulation or agents? Panel discussion.
3. Designing and evaluating human-centered AI systems: guidelines and methods; data, bias, and trust. Design workshop.
4. Paradigms for Human-AI Interaction: smart interfaces, conversational agents and chatbots.
5. Hands-on session: prototyping a conversational agent. Project presentation.
