The course proposes a methodological approach to the digital transformation of manufacturing buildings, based on the concept of Society 5.0, analysing processes, contents and tools in relation to the peculiarity of different typologies of places of work. The aim is to provide to the students a method to approach the management of the data of smart manufacturing and factories as a whole, using a Digital Twin as data source for Virtual and Augmented Reality as well as for 3D printing. The course will design a vision of the future, where people, devices, factories and places of work will be connected, in order to communicate heterogeneous Big Data and make smart decisions in an optimized workflow digital-based.

The student will acquire competence in managing the complexity of the heterogeneous data typical of the concept of Society 5.0 in order to use digital technologies to improve the quality of the life of workers, starting from an optimization of the process that is able to guarantee also an increase in production. This will provide the students with the ability to manage factories able to pay attention to people and sustainability. Furthermore, the students will learn to manage technologies in an interoperable way, comparing different scenarios and identifying the best one. Finally, the students will develop the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams communicating using time by time the most appropriate tools for Virtual and Augmented Reality.

• Traditional Vs Digital manufacturing: processes, contents and tools. • Traditional Vs Smart factories: data management using BIM, interoperability and Digital Twin. • Adoption of smart technologies to increase the quality of life of workers: the concept of Society 5.0. • Review of the layout of the factories: integration between traditional and smart working. • Transformation of traditional into smart factories: working on the essential goal of sustainability as a whole, at both building and district level. • Optimization of data visualization and communication: use of Virtual and Augmented Reality with 3D printing in an integrated way.

The course is organized in theoretical lessons aimed at dealing with the topics described in the program and by a practical exercise in applying the concepts learned to the proposed case study. This organization allows the student: (i) to develop a critical ability in finding, analysing and managing heterogeneous data about people, buildings and processes; (ii) to learn how to choose the most suitable scenario from time to time, always with particular attention to innovation. The exercise provides: (i); the data collection and modelling of real case studies; (ii) the realization of a digital twin (Digital Twin) at the building scale containing all the graphic and alphanumeric information collected and processed using visual programming; (v) the use of immersive virtual reality for the revision and the visualization of the model. The exercise is to be carried out in a group in order to develop a work ability based on comparison and collaboration as well as on the verification of the communication ability that must be clear and determined, in order to explain the reasons for the choices with specialized and non-specialized languages. The verification of autonomy and maturity takes place through the presentation and discussion of the digital model using immersive virtual meetings.

Exam:
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
