2023/24
The activity is proposed to the two curricula of the Master in Urban and Regional Planning and is related some On site applied experiences in the wide field of Planning and Design cultures and contemporary challenges In AY 2023 the LM 48 proposes a Workshop "Planning for biodiversity" BACKGROUND Biodiversity is gaining growing interest in numerous disciplinary domains and is becoming central to the international debate on sustainable design and planning. In England, this rise of interest has been further triggered by a new mandatory requirement, introduced by the Environmental Act in 2021. In compliance with this Act, planning applications will need to demonstrate that post-development, the natural environment will be better than it was beforehand, by ensuring a 10% biodiversity increase as a minimum. In these statutory terms, the concept of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) has become a ground-breaking approach to land management and development aimed at achieving measurable betterment and will become mandatory for obtaining planning permissions in England after being incorporated in the Town and Planning Country Act. Further details of this new legal framework entail securing habitat for 30 years as a minimum, via obligations/conservation covenants; habitat to be delivered either on site or off site via biodiversity credits; and creating a national register for biodiversity credits.

AIM The aim of this seminar is to explore the concept of biodiversity and its implementation in the UK context, and to apply this knowledge to chosen case studies in the Turin area.
The activity is characterized by the experimentation of planning and design theory in practices on specific territories. On successful completion of the seminar students will be able to: Knowledge and Understanding LO1: Understand the concept of biodiversity in the current debate in the UK. LO2: Understand how biodiversity is measured in the current regulatory framework in England. Transferable Skills LO3: Critically evaluate different outcomes in the use of different tools in measuring biodiversity. LO4: Critically evaluate the implications of implementing biodiversity targets in plans and projects.
