The course is at introductory level and it is particularly recommended to Data Analysts and Computer Professionals, even if it is open to all PhD students. The lectures will be in English and include discussions of the material provided by the teacher (slides, articles, etc.) and the preparation of a short paper.
The PhD students will be involved in discussions about all problems related to the diffusion of computers in society, in particular, will be investigated the main ethical dilemmas that computer professionals and users have to face. The main goals of the course are: to cultivate the questioning capability (ars interrogandi) and the ethical skills and competences of students. The core of the course is based on a methodology for facing difficult ethical questions related to computers: case description, stakeholders' network analysis, ethical issues identification and proposal of possible alternative scenarios. Among the many cases (real and fictionary) involving digital technologies: e-Democracy, Accessibility, Universal Access & Digital Divide, Computer & Workplace, Content & Education, Copyrights, Hackers, Privacy, Computer Crimes & Cybersecurity, Computer (Un)Reliability, Artificial Intelligence, CyberWar, Environmental impact of digital technologies, Slow Tech (steps towards good, clean and fair information and communication technologies).
