In this course, the fundamentals and applications of fluid dynamics and thermal calculation of fluid network systems and systems that can be analyzed with this approach are presented. This allows the estimation of the various quantities (pressures, temperature and mass flow rates) in systems that can be modelled as networks. This topic is of particular interest to various fields of engineering. Systems as the compressed air networks, water distribution networks, low and medium pressure gas networks, district heating systems, ventilation systems for civil users, industrial and large underground installations, such as tunnels highways, railway and mining and networks for fire protection can be analyzed using the presented approach. The combination of network models and continuous models, such as multi-scale approaches 1D-3D, as well as the use of the network theory for the analysis of porous media will be analyzed. The analytical approaches necessary for the formulation of models will be provided during the lessons.

Basic concepts on thermodynamics and thermo-fluidynamic
Continuity equation, momentum equation, energy equation for fluid systems in the one-dimensional representation. The topology of the networks, incidence matrix. Matrix formulation for mass and energy transfer using network representation. Steady state and transient models. Numerical techniques for the problem solution. Multi-level approach. Some applications to particularly significant systems will be considered: 1. District heating. 2. Tunnel ventilation. 3. Distribution system for pressurized gas.
