The course aims to provide an overview of the role of magnetic components (inductors and transformers) in power electronic converters. It offers concepts and procedures for optimizing the design of these components. The course introduces the physical principles behind inductors and transformers and analyzes the different classes of power electronic applications in which magnetics design is particularly challenging. It addresses the state of the art of magnetic materials and their experimental characterization and describes the modeling of losses in magnetic components, including core and winding losses. Finally, the course presents different case studies in the design of magnetic components for power electronic applications.
