The Calculus of Variations studies the determination of minimizers of integral functionals. These type of problems arise everywhere in the applications of mathematics to engineer, physics, biology, economy ecc... In this basic course the so called direct methods of the Calculus of Variations will be presented for classical integral functionals, both in the scalar and in the vectorial case. Examples and applications will also be investigated.
Functional analysis, Lebesgue spaces and Sobolev spaces.
Introduction and classical methods in the Calculus of Variations, first variation, Euler Lagrange equations, second variation as a necessary condition, classical examples, Dirichlet integral and Dirichlet principle. The direct methods, lower semicontinuity and abstract existence of minimizers. Integral functionals for scalar functions, characterization of the lower semicontinuity, examples. Integral functionals for vectorial functions, characterization of the lower semicontinuity, examples. Functions of bounded variations, free discontinuity functionals, characterization of the lower semicontinuity, examples.
