The goal of the course is to provide students with a critical look at the information they are exposed to every day. Skepticism, together with the tools of the scientific method, is essential to discern between true data, false data, and manipulated information. These skills are necessary today in the world scenario of abundance of information, not always trustable. This short course is inspired by the book and lecture series “Calling bullshit” by Dr. Carl T. Bergstrom and Dr. Jevin D. West at the University of Washington. The course will have a duration of 10 hours.

Day 1: Introduction to bullshit. Spotting bullshit. The natural ecology of bullshit. Causality. Correlation is not causation. Day 2: Statistical traps and trickery. Bayes rule and conditional probabilities. Base-rate fallacy/prosecutor's fallacy. Means versus medians. Importance of higher moments. Data visualization. Big data. When do we have enough data, and when is it garbage in, garbage out? Day 3: Publication bias. Predatory publishing and scientific misconduct. Fake news. Refuting bullshit.
