The course highlights current research in architectural heritage restoration and focuses on the paradigmatic case of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. There will be contributions from French experts in various roles involved in the studies, analyses and restoration work that followed the fire of 2019, and seminar moments of interaction with the professors of the board DPA, an expression of the disciplines that converge in the debate on the significant site. One part will be devoted to Viollet-le-Duc. Recent research on his personality and his practice as a restorer will be presented. It will be an opportunity to recall the volume Dialogues sur Notre-Dame and to discuss the question: “Devions-nous restaurer Notre-Dame de Paris à l'identique?”. The choice of restoration materials, including lead, will be discussed in this context. This approach will allow for a more in-depth focus on this metal in a second part, presenting historical research and investigations on materials and sites dedicated to conserving various lead covers and ornaments in the context of the restoration of Notre Dame. The course will conclude with a third part, conceived in two lectures, one dedicated to the state of the art on the restoration site of the famous cathedral, the other on the ‘emotions’ deployed on the heritage recorded before and during the restoration site itself.
