The Smart Electricity Grids, i.e. the ac modern digital networks which have to provide reliable, sustainable and secure electrical energy, require sensors for the measurement of the electrical quantities, with high performances, large bandwidth and specific qualification. Also, the dc grids are of special interest due to their implementation linked to direct use of alternative energy sources (e.g. PV, wind), to charging of electric vehicles and to railway systems. Objectives: • provide an overview of the measurement needs in modern electrical grids. • provide a comprehensive overview of the sensors and meters used for the monitoring of the electrical quantities with a focus on those based on emerging technologies, • provide the basic elements for a correct qualification and calibration of the sensors.
