The course is designed to guide engineers working with Drill and blast applications, particularly in civil construction. After reviewing explosives and their characteristics and selection criteria, initiations, timing effects, and blasting patterns are discussed. A step-by-step procedure is outlined to help the engineer systematically review blasting submittals. Air blast and ground vibration are discussed, along with methods for evaluation and control.

Determining the correct pattern to use in different site conditions for different types of rocks, geological features, and discontinuities in the medium. Prediction of vibrations and criteria for their reduction, fly-rock and air overpressure mitigation. Choice of the correct initiation sequence according to the goal (delays between blast-holes or between groups/rows of blast-holes). Controlled blasting (contour charges) to avoid unwanted effects (over-break, under-break, back-break) to respect the wanted geometry in different construction sites, both open cast and underground. Typical examples: critical issues and proposed solutions.
