Contemporary digital technologies allow organizations to collect, store and analyze massive amounts of information coming from production processes, from the installed base of physical products, and from users accessing services. The impact of these technologies is highly significant, and ranges from the continuous improvement in internal efficiency and the quality of firms' offering, all the way to the development of radically new and disruptive business models involving multiple firms organized in complex ecosystems.
The course has the objective of providing students with an academically-grounded and managerially-oriented understanding of the way with which innovation processes (and, specifically, those based on digital technology and data science) can impact industries and can be proactively managed.
The first part of the course will be dedicated to a general discussion on the economics and management of innovation, which will be followed by an in-depth discussion on digitally-enabled strategies and business models. Lectures will be accompanied by multiple examples and mini-case studies, aimed at helping students understand the application of theoretical concepts to business practice.
Moreover, students will be organized in groups and required to carry out a project work aimed at studying real organizations and outlining potential digitalization strategies based on data science.

Moreover, the thorough discussion provided on Open Innovation will enable them to understand which specific approaches are most suitable for a firm to develop or acquire the competencies needed.

Moreover, students will be required to carry out a group-based project work on a real case. Specifically, students will work on a firm of their choice and - relying either on direct contact with the organization or on publicly available information and data - elaborate an "as-is" analysis of its business model, identify potential areas for improvement, and draft a "to-be" proposal of an innovation strategy based on data analytics.

The written exam will evaluate the degree to which students have learned and understood theoretical concepts. It will be based on a mixture of closed questions, open questions, and a short commentary to a text. The written exam will lead to a score of 20/30
The group-based project work will allow to evaluate the degree to which students are able to apply theoretical concepts in practice. It will lead to a score of 10/30, based on the following evaluation dimensions: theoretical soundness, internal coherence, business acumen, and presentation quality.

The written exam lasts 90 minutes, leads to a score of 20/30, and is taken in closed-book form. It has the goal of evaluating the degree to which students have learned and understood in depth the theoretical concepts taught in class. The written exam is be based on a mixture of:
- closed form questions, which are aimed at evaluating students' knowledge of the subject and, specifically, of discerning the correct meaning of key concepts; indicatively, the exam includes 5 questions with 2 points each, with negative marking in order to discourage random answers;
- open questions, aimed at evaluating whether students are able to articulate these concepts with clarity; indicatively, the exam includes 1 such question, with 4 points;
- a short commentary to a text taken from practitioner-level technical or business news, aimed at evaluating the degree to which students are able to interpret real-world events, and then frame and explain them according to theory; indicatively, this commentary is graded with 6 points.
The group-based project work, to be carried out during the course, allows to evaluate the degree to which students are able to apply theoretical concepts in a practical setting. It leads to a score of 10/30, based on the following evaluation dimensions: theoretical soundness, internal coherence, business acumen, and presentation quality.
After the written exam, students, are given a proposed mark, and may then ask for a perusal and discussion of their exam paper, and/or for an additional oral exam. This option may lead to either an upward or a downward revision of the proposed mark.
A cum laude mark can be achieved by students who reach 30/30 and who exhibit an extraordinary ability in interpreting and using theoretical concepts in practical settings.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
