The aim of the course is to provide the fundamental elements for the design and management of urban drainage networks for both wastewater and stormwater. The course will focus on engineering concepts about both traditional grey infrastructures and innovative nature-based approaches.
Civil engineers must be able to design of the infrastructures required in urban areas for a sustainable use of water, for dealing with the resulting wastewater and for protection against dangerous storm events. The aim of the course is to provide the fundamental elements for the design and management of urban drainage networks for both wastewater and stormwater. The course will focus on engineering concepts about both traditional grey infrastructures and innovative nature-based approaches.
Knowledge of urban drainage systems for wastewater and stormwater.
Ability to design pipes and other elements of distribution and drainage networks.

Basic knowledge of Hydraulics.
Basic knowledge of Hydraulics: hydrostatics principles; pressurized pipe flow; free-surface flow in uniform and transient conditions.
Management principles of wastewaster and stormwater in urban areas. Classification of drainage systems. Regulation issues. Design criteria for urban drainage systems. Principles of surface flow hydraulics.
Main elements of drainage networks. Conduit type and materials. Pumping stations. First-flush and storage tanks.
Evaluation of design flow for wastewater networks. Temporal patterns of wastewater discharge production. Sedimentation issues.
Evaluation of design flow for stormwater networks. General principles and routing methods.
Sustainable drainage systems (permeable pavements, swales, infiltration trenchs, retention ponds...).
Drainage system outflows. Contaminant transport in urban drainage systems and impact on water quality. Wastewater treatment principles. Constructed wetlands.
Management principles of wastewaster and stormwater in urban areas. Classification of drainage systems. Regulation issues. Design criteria for urban drainage systems. Precipitation analysis and rainstorm design methods (including climate change). Principles of surface flow hydraulics.
Main elements of drainage networks. Conduit type and materials. Pumping stations. First-flush and detention tanks.
Evaluation of design flow for wastewater networks. Temporal variations in wastewater discharge production. Sedimentation issues.
Evaluation of design flow for stormwater networks. General principles and routing methods.
Sustainable drainage systems (green roofs, permeable pavements, swales, infiltration systems, ponds...). Contaminant transport in urban drainage systems and impact on water quality.
Students will be asked to solve exercises on the sizing principles shown during lectures. A visit to a water treatment plant will be also planned.
Lectures (approx. 40 h) will give an overview on the main elements and on the sizing methods of urban infrastructures for water management. Exercises (approx. 20 h) will provide the students the opportunity to apply the sizing principles discussed during lectures. A technical visit to sites implementing sustainable drainage systems in Turin will also be planned.

The exam is based on an oral test to verify the understanding of the concepts presented during lectures. At the exam, the students must present a written essay on the exercises performed during the course, which will be discussed to verify the student’s ability to perform design calculations.
Gli studenti e le studentesse con disabilità o con Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento (DSA), oltre alla segnalazione tramite procedura informatizzata, sono invitati a comunicare anche direttamente al/la docente titolare dell'insegnamento, con un preavviso non inferiore ad una settimana dall'avvio della sessione d'esame, gli strumenti compensativi concordati con l'Unità Special Needs, al fine di permettere al/la docente la declinazione più idonea in riferimento alla specifica tipologia di esame.

The exam is based on an oral test to verify the understanding of the concepts presented during lectures. At the exam, the students must present a written essay on the exercises performed during the course, which will be discussed to verify the student’s ability to perform design calculations.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
