The course is aimed at providing students with the tools for a critical reading of the relationship between architecture and urban context in the contemporary city, in its main historical and material stratifications, of meaning and use.
The course will develop a chronological approach, multilayered and multiscaled, and particularly enlighten critical changes. It will deal with cultural heritage in the context of history and environment. Elements will be analysed at architectural scale throughout the urban and landscape. The combination between history of architecture, cities, townplanning and heritage awareness will be studied framing several cities of the world. In this path the use of images and imaginary in the heritigisation processes will be a milestone of the course topics. The course will focus on the process of identification and cultural heritage building since 19th Century in the framework of urban changes in Europe and beyond. The opposition between the notion of heritage building and industrialization and urbanisation will especially be surveyed. It will consider the architectural heritage as a component of the heritage notion and its relations with the parallel conceptualization of the past and an historical approach. The beginnings of former institutions, the contribution of different fields and expertise will be investigated. Debate, tools and circulation among different countries will be another focus. The 20th Century post-wars periods will be investigated especially focusing on issues of loose of heritage and reconstructions in historic cities. This topic about heritage at risk will be also further investigated in multiple countries framing other kind of disaster experiences. The impact of digital age on history of architecture and city and heritage will be the object of a crosscutting issue within the course. Relationships between global and local approach will be discussed. The course will foster a global history approach in post-colonial and gender perspectives. Furthermore, the course includes students’ concentration on specific case studies. Small group of students will be addressed to link heritagization processes and historical narratives by creating a final outcome.
The course consists of a series of lectures presenting the mentioned course topics, seminars on some case studies, historiography discussions, and practices developed with student groups.
