La superficie di un materiale solido ha proprietà fisiche che differiscono dalle proprietà della fase bulk. Spesso le proprietà dei materiali, soprattutto su scala nanometrica, sono dominate dagli effetti di superficie. Questo corso si propone di introdurre i fenomeni fisici che si verificano sulla superficie di un materiale (ad esempio, ricostruzione della superficie, fononi di superficie, stati di superficie e così via) e come caratterizzarli con tecniche sperimentali specifiche.
The surface of a solid material has physical properties which differ from the properties of its bulk phase. Often material properties, particularly at the nanoscale, are dominated by surface effects. This course aims at introducing the modifications and the physical phenomena that occurs at the surface of a material (e.g. surface reconstruction, surface phonons, surface states and so on) and how to characterize them with surface specific exper-imental techniques.

Proprietà elettroniche delle superfici: origine degli stati superficiali. Esempi di strutture a bande di superficie. Spettroscopia di fotoemissione ultravioletta: teoria ed esperimenti.
