2025/26
The course aims at providing basic knowledge and tools necessary to properly address the management of the key environmental aspects (emissions to air, discharge to water, waste, etc.) related to the operational environmental management of industrial sites. The environmental management will be considered both in relation to the compliance to authorization procedures (EIA, IEA, etc..) and operational legal requirements (monitoring, reporting, etc.), and to the possible implementation of voluntary tools, such as ISO 14001-EMAS Environmental Management Systems (environmental certification and registration) and eco-labels (EU Ecolabel, Carbon Footprint, etc.).
The course aims at providing basic knowledge and tools to address the management of the key environmental aspects (emissions to air, discharge to water, waste, etc.) related to the operation of industrial sites. Environmental management refers to the compliance to authorization procedures (EIA, IEA, etc..) and operational legal requirements (monitoring, reporting, etc.), and to the implementation of voluntary tools, such as ISO 14001-EMAS Environmental Management Systems (environmental certification and registration) and eco-labels (EU Ecolabel, Carbon Footprint, etc.).
Knowledge of the main mandatory environmental legal requirements for companies Ability to identify the key environmental aspects related to a company's activities/products/services Knowledge of voluntary eco-management tools (Environmental Management Systems) and eco-labels Capacity to identify the best options available for the correct management of emissions and residues of a production activity (by-product, waste, discharge) Capacity to analyse industries’ environmental reports
Ability to identify the key environmental aspects related to the (design and) operation of an industrial site Knowledge of the main mandatory environmental legal requirements for industries (env. Authorisations (AIA-AUA), waste management, discharges, emissions to air, etc.) Ability to identify the best options available for the correct management of emissions and residues of an industrial activity (by-product, waste, discharge) Knowledge of the key steps for implementing an Environmental Management System (ISO 14001-EMAS) in a company, and its implications with other organizational processes (training, communication, procurement and supply chain, product design, “management of change”, etc.) Basic knowledge of the main voluntary eco-labelling (EU Ecolabel, EPD) and GHG reporting schemes (Carbon Footprint) Ability to analyse industries’ environmental reports
Basic elements of applied environmental engineering (identification of pollutant streams originating from human activities, techniques for treating emissions, discharges, waste, etc.)
DPSIR model and Environmental Impact Assessment Environmental authorizations and operational mandatory legal requirements (waste management, discharges, emissions to air, etc.) Environmental Management Systems according to ISO 14001 and EMAS Other environmental certifications and labels: EU Ecolabel, Carbon Footprint, etc.
DPSIR model and Environmental Impact Assessment (8h) Environmental authorizations and operational mandatory legal requirements (waste management, discharges, emissions to air, etc.) (26h) Environmental Management Systems according to ISO 14001 and EMAS (20h) Other environmental certifications and labels: EU Ecolabel, Carbon Footprint, etc. (6h)
Classroom exercises will be carried out by means of individual and/or group work on some key topics (e.g. operational management of special waste, correlation activities-environmental aspects, etc.). For at least one of them a brief written (group) report will have to be produced and delivered by the date of the final exam, the assessment of which will contribute to the formulation of the final mark (from 0 to 4 points). In addition, during the course some intermediate assessment activities will be carried out, which will be assessed and will contribute to the formulation of the final mark (from 0 to 3 points). Specific details on topics and modalities relating to the group report and intermediate assessment activities will be provided during the course.
The course is structured into lectures (ca 70%) and classroom exercises (ca 30%). Classroom exercises will be carried out by means of individual and/or group work on some key topics (e.g. operational management of special waste, correlation activities-environmental aspects, etc.). For at least one of them a brief (group) report will have to be produced and delivered/presented by the date of the final exam, and its assessment will contribute to the formulation of the final mark. In addition, during the course some intermediate assessment activities (multiple choice questions online surveys, presentation of group work, etc.) will be carried out, contributing to the formulation of the final mark. Specific details on related topics and modalities will be provided during the course.

Modalità di esame: Prova scritta (in aula); Prova orale facoltativa;
Exam: Written test; Optional oral exam;
...
Exam: Written test; Optional oral exam;
The test is aimed at assessing if the student has adequately reached the expected learning outcomes, and in particular the ability to identify the key environmental aspects related to industrial activities and the knowledge of the main mandatory environmental legal requirements for industries and the voluntary tools that can be adopted to improve and disclose their environmental performances. The assessment will be based on a written test, paper-based, consisting of 3 open-ended questions, with a maximum duration of 60'. During the test no course material nor any electronic device can be consulted and no interactions with other students is allowed.  The written test is deemed successfully passed with a mark equal to or above 18. If not passed (i.e. mark lower than 18), it can be repeated on the next exam call (“appello”), while the intermediate check mark (if any) will remain valid with no time limit.  If passed, an optional oral test may be requested by the student. It will have an approximate duration of 15’ and will consist of 2-3 questions, with at least one related to the topics in which a deficiency may have been recorded during the written test. The mark obtainable for the optional oral test may vary from - 4 to + 4. The final overall course mark will be the sum, rounded up, of the written test mark and the intermediate check mark (if any), deducting/adding the optional oral test mark. If this sum will be lower than 18 or if it will not be accepted for formal registration, the written test will have to be repeated (int. check mark will instead remain valid). On the other hand, if this sum will be equal to or above 31, a final overall course mark of 30L will be awarded.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
