2024/25
The course aims at the evaluation of the stability of natural and man-made geostructures (slopes, enmbakments, dams) under the effect of clima change patterns.
The first part of the course focuses on the stress strain behavior of soils and rocks, coupled with the effect of water pressure.
The second part of the course focuses on: 1) the engineering methods used to analyze the stability of geostructures; 2) the methods of design of man-made geostructures in pre-climate change time, coupled with the analysis of primary and secondary perils; 3) new climate change related approaches for maintenace of manmade geostructures; 4) correlation between the stability of natural slopes and climate change effects: extreme rainfall events, change in temperature, snow melting and glacier retreats.

At the end of the course students should be able to:
- Evaluate the effect of the the variation of the stability of geostructures with changes in pressure of water in rocks ands soils.
- Identify emerging and unexpected risks: hidden natural dangers and human fingerprint dangers.
- Identify primary and secondary perils of geostructures under climate change effects
- to debias disaster perception and make safe cities, infrastructures, assets, facilities and rural activities, in the framework of a better engineering practice
At the end of the course the students should be able to:

Hydraulics (basic principles)
Primary and secondary perils. Primary perils are generally analyzed with sound methods. Secondary perils can be the consequence of primary perils:
- Critical State Soil Mechanics. Drained and undrained conditions
- Modified Cam Clay Model
- Failure and deformation behavior of rock masses. Rock matrix and discontinuities
- Types of instability of geo-structures
- Limit Equilibrium Methods for the evaluation of the stability of geo-structures
- Effect of temperature and extreme climate events on geo-structures
- Identification of primary and secondary perils
- Refocus of efforts on measures to predict and reduce preventable geo-structure failures
- Maintenance of human-made geo-structures
The course is organized in theoretical lectures and practical lessons.
During the practical lessons the students have to solve exercises by applying the theory explained in lectures.
Two practical lessons are devoted to verify the stability of a slope with a software. Each student has to calculate the safety factor of a slope with given paramenters. A global sensitivity analysis, based on the the students' calculations is carried out.
The course is organized in theoretical lectures and practical lessons.
During the practical lessons the students have to solve exercises by applying the theory explained in lectures.
Three practical lessons are devoted to verify the stability of natural and man-made geo-structures with a software.

The exam will be written, closed book, in a classroom of the Politecnico di Torino. The exam comprises 3 main questions. Questions are related to the topics explained in class. Questions consist of discussion of a given topic and/or the solution of a practical exercise.

The student should be able to carry out stability analyses and identify primary and secondary perils to prebent hidden natural dangers and to reduce human fingerprint dangers.
The exam will be written, closed book, in a classroom of the Politecnico di Torino. The exam comprises 3 main questions. Questions are related to the topics explained in class. Questions consist of discussion of a given topic and/or the solution of a practical case. The written exam lasts 1 hour.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
