This course is designed to help people improve their decision-making skills so that they are ready to make decisions in the event of a crisis. The course covers the naturalistic and recognition primed decision making models, and then focuses on the ways in which leaders observe, orient, decide, and act during crisis situations.

Upon completion of the course you will be able to: 1. Describe four leadership types related to decision-making 2. Identify two primary approaches to decision making models 3. Develop decision-making skills through the application of “OODA” loops 4. Identify and explain the relevance of each of the 7 core system capacities for public health preparedness 5. Define the differences between an emergency and a disaster 6. Summarize the purpose and importance of an emergency response plan 7. Describe the utility of an incident command system in emergency response 8. List the hazards in a community and its vulnerabilities 9. Describe the process of using hazards identification and vulnerability assessment to determine risk for emergency planning purposes using models The structure is articulated in five days, which include both taught lessons and group-work sessions. The first day will be devoted to the policy and political dimensions of a decision, understanding the basic elements of decision-making and decisional strategies under natural and manmade disasters. Monday will be dedicated to the conceptual design of base isolation systems with some applications and case studies. Tuesday will be shown examples of applications of decision making during offshore sailing emergencies. Wednesday morning will focus on the resilience assessment of communities and infrastructures under multiple hazards. The topic of structural control and health monitoring will be also analyzed. Group work sessions will be organized in the three afternoon, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (Sala Riunioni). A final test will be performed before the end of the course.
