Challenge@Polito_by Students is an innovative teaching activity carried out at the Politecnico di Torino. It is an integral part of the PoliTo’s strategy to promote innovative education and entrepreneurial culture among the students. The goal of these challenges is to involve students in learning initiatives capable of preparing them for the entrepreneurial world. The activities promote the early-stage ideas coming from students and give them the principles basic to develop their business projects. The process: the PoliTo selects a macro topic, up to 30 master’s students are divided into multidisciplinary teams and work, compete and develop their own solutions. The Challenges are carried out in an experimental educational laboratory: the CLIK - Connection Lab & Innovation Kitchen, or a similar space. During the challenge phase at the CLIK lab, students can experiment and practice what they have learned during their lectures in an informal and multidisciplinary environment that promotes the spirit of creativity and collaboration. Challenge@PoliTo_by Students - “Inclusion by Technology” Background Innovation and technology offer effective solutions to the challenges of contemporary society. In Italy, the ageing population requires a radical rethink of products and services through an accessible approach that meets evolving needs. The rising average age is accompanied by an increase in functional limitations affecting millions of people. Furthermore, according to ISTAT, about 3 million people in Italy live with severe disabilities, representing 5% of the population. Innovative and cross-sector approaches are needed in areas such as daily living, mobility, assistive technologies, tourism, and leisure. In this sense, products, services, and technologies are needed to address current and future needs related to disability, longevity, and demographic changes. Challenge Within this context, teams will be able to propose their own social, technological, and/or business solutions for inclusion and accessibility, taking into consideration, for example: • The Framing and analysis of the problems and the needs of the end user and case manager. • The study of the solution and, if applicable, the development and the test of a prototype. • The social impact and the size of the target segment. • The technical and social feasibility, as well as the economic sustainability evaluation. • An explanatory use case and a business model. If possible, the project will be carried out according to a participatory approach.

The main goal is to involve students in learning initiatives capable of bridging the gap between the university's theory and the skills required by companies to work in a team and to address societal wicked problems. Impact culture: understanding what "impact" means, how to influence medium and long-term through design actions aiming new behaviours, interactions, and relationships among people, communities, and organisations toward inclusion and accessibility. Entrepreneurial Culture: Promote the Entrepreneurial culture/behavior among the PoliTo Students. Multidisciplinary Teams: Collaborate in a complex and multidisciplinary context. Information research: Retrieval, Data collection and utilization of information to support teamwork activities. Hard Skills: Put into practice what they have learned during their lectures to explore new business scenarios and eventually establish a start-up. Soft Skills: Teamwork under conditions close to a real business environment, self-assessment and work organization. At the end of this activity, students will be readier to work in a multidisciplinary team, a skill required by companies. They will be able to analyze industrial problems having a more comprehensive view of technical and market issues.

The Challenges of the second didactic period last 14 weeks; they start in February 2026 and end in June 2026. During Challenge, students have to work in multidisciplinary teams supported by a group of tutors, coming from PoliTo and from Hackability (https://www.hackability.it/), with complementary backgrounds and competencies, under the lead of Professor Cristian Campagnaro (DAD - Department of Architecture and Design; POpS- Polito per il Sociale (https://www.polito.it/impatto-sociale/polito-per-il-sociale). Every team will self-organize its own working time and methodology. But, they will have to spend about 1,5 hours/week, supported by mentors, in the CLIK Lab, similar space or in remote, in addition to the joint alignment meetings (specified subsequently).

The event will take place at the Lab CLIK (Connection Lab and Innovation Kitchen) located in the central building of the Politecnico di Torino (Corso Duca degli Abruzzi, 24), in a similar space or in a remote way, with the following program: ● Kick-Off & Team Formation: the partner company and tutors will hold a session on the Challenge's issues. There will be the Team Formation and Team Building phases to the establishment of multidisciplinary teams. Joint meeting of 2 days. ● Problem Analysis and Idea Creation: two weeks in which the teams will analyze the problem in detail. A team of mentors will support the teams through weekly meetings. ● Idea Presentation – 1st Work Progress: each team will present (by a pitch) the problem and the proposed solution. Joint meeting of half-day. ● Prototyping and Development: teams will meet at CLIK (or similar space or remote way) weekly to meet with mentors who will support the project's development. 11 weeks of teamwork. ● Two Mid-Check Presentations – 2nd and 3rd Work Progress: two half-day meetings on work progress during the Prototyping and Development phase. ● Final Presentation: the teams will present their projects through the pitch of the idea.
