Research on innovative building envelope systems for Zero Energy / Carbon resilient buildings requires a multi-domain and multi-disciplinary approach, based on both advanced simulation and experimental methods. This is needed to quantify the performance of innovative building envelope technologies (both opaque and transparent) and to quantify their impact on the building energy use and on occupant comfort (in terms of thermal comfort, visual comfort, IAQ and acoustic comfort). In more detail, this course aims to provide concepts, instruments and methodologies for, on the one side experimental methods for the performance characterization and model validations / calibration of such building envelope components, while on the other for concepts related to advanced component and building level simulation (and co-simulation) by means of Building Performance Simulation tools. The course activity includes also active participation to experimental sessions and independent experimental activity (singularly or in group) and direct use of measurement instruments and data post-processing. Intended Learning Outcomes - Methodologies to characterise performance of building envelope components (approach focused) - Metrics for performance characterization (data focused)

P.D.1-1 - January
Final submission of extended abstract (4 pages maximum) detailing methodology and main results of measurements developed independently for a specific building envelope component (1 per group of 2-4 students depending on numerosity of student in the course). Final oral presentation and discussion of the groups work (with all the group present), based on the extended abstract submitted.
