Internships are offered to students as the first real chance to gain experience in the world of work. An internship gives you the opportunity to put into practice what you have learned during your studies and it will help you decide about your future professional career. Politecnico di Torino promotes internships and guarantees insurance coverage both for civil liability and occupational injuries. Before starting an internship, you need to include it in your Personal Study Plan/Annual Personal Study Plan in the academic year in which you would like to do your internship. You can do an internship (6 CFU- 150 hours) during the Master's degree programme. This internship can be extended by further credits as indicated in the "extension" section. You can do your internship in private or public companies such as engineering or architecture design studios or firms, construction companies, public administrations, concession holding companies (highways and railways, energy production and distribution, water and sewage management, etc.), universities and research labs. You can do your internship in Italy or abroad. The legal representative of the company and the company tutor should not have family ties with the intern.

If the professor agrees, he/she will become your Academic Tutor. During the internship, you must inform your Academic Tutor about the progress of the internship in relation to the content of the training project. If you do your internship after having sent the thesis application, your Academic Tutor cannot be your Thesis Supervisor. If the internship and the thesis are carried out at the same company/institution, you must complete your internship before applying for the thesis. At the end of the internship, you will have to upload a report on the activity carried out (signed by the company tutor) on the portal, together with your timesheet. In this report, at least 20 pages for every 6 credits, you need to describe the activity in detail by presenting calculations, surveys, drawings, calculations, projects, etc. Extending the duration of your internship: internships have a given duration (hours) and provide a certain number of credits as specified in the Annual Personal Study Plan. You can extend the duration of your internship (number of hours) by selecting one of the options available in the field “Expected no. of hours”. You can only do this operation before the beginning of your internship and not while you are doing it. Any request to extend the duration of an internship must be decided together with the Host Company. It MUST also be approved by a Polito faculty member (your Academic Tutor or the Internship Coordinator for your degree programme) who may reject your proposal. In this case, you need to make a new proposal and fill out a new Training Project. If your Training Project is approved, it means that the extension of your internship and the extra hours have been accepted too. At the end of an internship with extended duration, you will see that the internship is recorded in your transcript as follows: INTERNSHIP with standard hours/credits in accordance with the rules of your degree programme (i.e. 6 credits/150 hours) plus the annotation “curricular internship extension” with your extra hours/credits. These credits will be recorded in your transcript as credit overload (they do not count towards the 120-credits threshold required for Master’s graduation). The extra credits (6 or 12) grant a bonus for the final grade in the Master's Final Examination (1 point maximum out of 110). The internship is considered as an activity formulated from scratch. However, you are allowed to request the recognition of professional skills in substitution for your free choice credits.
