L'insegnamento presenta e discute l'attuale dibattito internazionale sugli studi urbani, con l'obiettivo di fornire una conoscenza più ampia delle principali teorie urbane e di stimolare una comprensione critica del fenomeno urbano contemporaneo.
Approfondendo il dibattito dal punto di vista teorico, gli argomenti affrontati riguardano principalmente il processo di urbanizzazione contemporaneo.
Durante il corso, un workshop è dedicato al rafforzamento delle seguenti competenze: (i) lettura e comprensione di articoli pubblicati su riviste internazionali (ad es. Urban Studies, Progress in Human Geography, City, International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Environment and Planning A and D, Antipode; ecc.), (ii) definizione di una domanda di ricerca e (iii) redazione di una revisione della letteratura (stile di scrittura, selezione dei riferimenti, uso delle fonti bibliografiche, ecc.)
This PhD course is part of the thematic path "Urban and Regional Studies" of the PhD programme in Urban and Regional Development.
The course presents and discusses the current international debate on urban studies, with the aim to provide a wider knowledge on the main urban theories and to stimulate a critical knowledge of the contemporary urban phenomenon.
Adopting a theoretical lenses, the course mainly refers to the contemporary urbanisation process.
During the course, a workshop is dedicated to strengthening the following skills: (i) reading and understanding articles published in international journals (e.g. Urban Studies, Progress in Human Geography, City, International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Environment and Planning A and D, Antipode; etc.), (ii) defining a research question and (iii) writing a literature review (writing style, selecting references, use of bibliographic sources, etc.)

L'insegnamento presenta e discute i concetti e gli approcci chiave nel campo degli studi urbani, con particolare attenzione all’emergere della cosiddetta teoria urbana critica e alle sue traiettorie. Le lezioni sono strutturate come un dialogo tra diversi approcci agli studi urbani e regionali.
Sono trattati tre argomenti principali:
1. Gli studi urbani tra conoscenza urbana mainstream e teoria urbana critica (12 ore);
2. La svolta infrastrutturale (4 ore);
3. Differenze, disuguaglianze e marginalità nel contesto urbano (4 ore).-
The course aims to explore key concepts and approaches in the field of urban studies, with special attention to the rise of the so-called critical urban theory and its trajectories. Lectures are organised as a dialogue between different approaches to urban and regional studies.
Three main topics are covered:
1. Urban studies between mainstream urban knowledge and critical urban theory and (12h);
2. the infrastructure turn (4h);
3. Differences, inequalities, and marginalities in the urban realm (4h).
