This short course on demolition aims to highlight the field’s evolution into an increasingly important and technologically advanced discipline. While demolition is often perceived as simpler than construction, and the knowledge required to plan and execute it may appear more basic, the study of demolition plays a significant role in the development of both civil and environmental engineering. Demolition techniques are essential: no demolition project should be approved without a corresponding and well-defined construction or redevelopment plan. The main objectives of the course are to present the principal techniques currently in use, to provide the tools needed to identify the most appropriate technique for specific situations, taking into account technical and economic factors, and to critically examine demolition practices across different types of structures and materials.

Notions of Structural Mechanics; notions of excavation techniques.
Reasons for demolition: context and overview. Mechanical demolition techniques and equipment: expansive mortars, hydraulic hammers, crushers and shears, and cutting tools. Techniques for structural weakening before demolition. Overview of equipment with key case examples. Collapse-based techniques: partial (selective/conservative) demolition; lateral collapse; vertical collapse; implosion. Mixed methods and special challenges (e.g., bridge sections, viaducts, etc.). Water injection techniques. Non-collapse techniques: progressive top-down demolition and sectional dismantling. Unintended effects and their control: debris falling outside the designated area, flyrock, vibrations, air overpressure, and noise. Case studies and analysis of significant real-world projects (both civil and industrial demolitions).
