Questo corso introduce i principi della Comunicazione e rilevamento integrati nelle reti ottiche, mostrando come le infrastrutture ottiche possano evolvere da semplici sistemi di comunicazione a piattaforme multifunzionali, capaci sia di trasmettere dati sia di svolgere funzioni di sensing.
Il corso copre i fondamenti delle reti ottiche, le principali tecniche di sensing in fibra, incluse quelle basate su scattering, stato di polarizzazione e interferometria, e l’integrazione delle funzionalità di sensing nelle reti ottiche di comunicazione. Verranno inoltre discusse tecnologie abilitanti come transceiver coerenti, digital signal processing, machine learning e reti software-defined.
Le applicazioni considerate includono il monitoraggio di infrastrutture critiche, smart cities, reti ferroviarie ed energetiche, cavi sottomarini, rilevamento di eventi ambientali e sismici, e scenari futuri orientati al 6G.
Il corso è pensato per dottorandi e giovani ricercatori. Non sono richiesti prerequisiti specifici ed è aperto anche a studenti senza un background specifico nelle comunicazioni ottiche.
This course introduces the principles of Integrated Sensing and Communication in Optical Networks, showing how optical infrastructures can evolve from pure communication systems into multifunctional platforms capable of both data transmission and sensing.
The course covers the fundamentals of optical networks, the main fiber-optic sensing techniques, including scattering-based, polarization-based, and interferometric approaches, and the integration of sensing functions into optical communication networks. Enabling technologies such as coherent transceivers, digital signal processing, machine learning, and software-defined networking will also be discussed.
Emerging applications include infrastructure monitoring, smart cities, railway and energy networks, submarine cables, environmental and seismic event detection, and future 6G-oriented scenarios.
The course is designed for PhD students and young researchers. No specific prerequisites are required, and it is also open to students without a specific background in optical communications.
