The course aims to provide doctoral students with an overview of the main techniques for the analysis of composite structures modelled as beams, plates and shells. The analysis of such structures presents considerable complexity — particularly with regard to out-of-plane stress analysis — and can involve significant computational costs. For this reason, the course focuses on presenting theories and finite element methods capable of combining result accuracy with computational efficiency. The course opens with a brief introduction to composite structures and their use in the aerospace field, before addressing classical and advanced theories for the analysis of one- and two-dimensional structures, including the Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) and Layer-Wise (LW) approaches. Advanced modelling of one-dimensional structures is then covered, along with locking issues in finite elements and the related mitigation strategies, with particular reference to high-order elements based on Lagrange and Legendre polynomials. The central part is devoted to the accurate analysis of transverse stresses in laminated structures, with case studies on sandwich structures and the free-edge phenomenon, as well as dynamic analysis. The course concludes with an introduction to the concept of Node-Dependent Kinematics (NDK) and an outline of multi-field problems such as piezoelectricity and thermal analysis.
Basic knowledge of structural mechanics, mechanics of materials and the finite element method is required. Previous familiarity with numerical modelling, linear structural analysis, beam and plate theories is useful but not strictly mandatory.
• Applicazione all'analisi dinamica delle strutture. • Cenni all'applicazione a problemi multicampo, con riferimento alla piezoelettricità e all'analisi termica.
The course presents the main finite element theories for the analysis of composite laminated structures, with reference to beams, plates and shells. Both classical and advanced theories are covered, along with the typical issues arising in FEM formulations and the strategies to mitigate them. Particular attention is given to the Node-Dependent Kinematics (NDK) technique, which allows the most suitable structural theory to be selected for each node. The concluding part is devoted to applications in various structural analysis contexts, including static, dynamic, nonlinear and multi-field problems. The programme is organised around the following topics: • A brief introduction to composite structures and their use in the aerospace field. • Classical and advanced theories for the analysis of one- and two-dimensional structures, with an introduction to the Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) and Layer-Wise (LW) approaches. • Advanced modelling of one-dimensional structural theories. • Locking issues in finite elements and mitigation strategies. • High-order finite elements based on Lagrange and Legendre polynomials for advanced modelling and the mitigation of locking phenomena. • Advanced modelling of beams, panels and shells using high-order elements within the FEM framework. • Accurate analysis of transverse stresses in laminated structures, with case studies on sandwich structures and the free-edge phenomenon. • Application to dynamic structural analysis. • Introduction to the concept of Node-Dependent Kinematics (NDK) and its application to 1D and 2D structures for static and dynamic cases. • An outline of the application to multi-field problems, with reference to piezoelectricity and thermal analysis.
