Enumerative geometry is a classical branch of mathematics concerned with counting geometric objects satisfying prescribed conditions. It dates back to ancient Greeks: for instance a famous example in this area is the Apollonian problem of finding the eight circles tangent to another three on the plane. In the nineteenth century these problems were formalised using modern mathematical language. The guiding question of enumerative geometry can be phrased simply: ``How many geometric structures of a given type meet a specified set of geometric constraints?" Despite this elementary formulation, many fundamental problems remained inaccessible throughout much of the twentieth century. Remarkably, significant progress emerged from ideas originating in theoretical physics, particularly string theory, which introduced powerful new perspectives and tools. This course pursues two main objectives. First, it provides a broad overview of enumerative geometry, starting from classical problems -such as counting lines and conics- and progressing toward modern developments and open questions, including those related to quintic hypersurfaces and their connections with physics. Second, it uses enumerative geometry as a unifying framework to introduce key structures that play a central role in contemporary algebraic geometry.
Very basic knowledge of differential geometry and algebraic geometry. Depending on the requirements and necessities of the participants, some introductory lessons can be added to the topics.
