This course is proposing mostly practical activities, with the objective to show what experimental information we can have in natural hydrological systems, in order to use models. • Initial visit to the NODES SUMMER critical zone observatory of Politecnico and University of Turin located in the forest of Bussoleno, where CO2 and water fluxes are measured in soil and from the canopy, together with infiltration fluxes, and stable isotopes composition of water in soil and plants. • Then some soil hydraulics laboratory measurements will be performed to better understand how field measurements works. • Finally, HYDRUS-1D and Land Surface CLM numerical models will be used to simulate the soil water dynamics in the mentioned observatory.
