Roads, Railways and Airports - module This module aims at providing basic knowledge in the geometrical design and construction of transportation infrastructures such as roads, railways and airports. Particular attention will be given to the safe interaction between moving entities and transportation infrastructures and, more generally, to expected performance levels from the functional and structural point of view. Water Infrastructures - module
Coherently with the professional activities of civil engineers working in the transportation infrastructure field, this module aims at providing basic knowledge in the geometrical design and construction of transportation infrastructures such as roads, railways and airports. Particular attention will be given to the safe interaction between moving entities and transportation infrastructures and, more generally, to expected performance levels from the functional and structural point of view.
Roads, Railways and Airports - module The aim of this module is to develop the ability to recognize the technical characteristics of transport infrastructure, as well as the ability to identify the reference theories for evaluating their performance. Topics will be presented to develop strong analytical skills, useful for solving problems with typical professional implications. The module will allow students to acquire the following skills: - ability to analyze transport demand for the purpose of pre-design the infrastructure and its components in functional and structural terms; - ability to evaluate the interaction between moving entities and infrastructures (roads, railways and airports) for geometric design purposes; - ability to assess physical and mechanical characteristics of construction materials. - knowing how to make and motivate design choices, - ability to identify the orders of magnitude of the numerical values that characterize the system variables, -ability to represent in graphic form the design entities; - knowing technical terminology Water Infrastructures - module
The aim of this module is to develop the ability to recognize the technical characteristics of transport infrastructure, as well as the ability to identify the reference theories for evaluating their performance. Topics will be presented to develop analytical skills, useful for solving problems with typical professional implications. The module will allow students to acquire the following skills: - ability to analyze transport demand and its functional and structural components; - ability to evaluate the interaction between moving entities and infrastructures (roads, railways and airports) for geometric design purposes; - ability to assess physical and mechanical characteristics of construction materials; - knowing technical terminology.
Roads, Railways and Airports – module The student is required to know the basic engineering disciplines, in particular mathematics, physics, material science and technology, and structural mechanics. Water Infrastructures - module
For the two modules, the student is required to know the basic engineering disciplines, in particular mathematics, physics, material science and technology, structural mechanics, and fundamentals of fluid mechanics. It is also expected a basic command in the use of spreadsheet calculations.
Roads, Railways and Airports - module 1. Types of transportation infrastructures and their general technical characteristics; 2. Organization of infrastructure networks, identification of mobility demand, quantification and analysis of the supply in terms of capacity and quality of service; 3. Characteristics of the driver-moving entity-infrastructure-environment system and interaction methods; 4. Fundamentals of geometric design; 6. Physical properties and constitutive models of construction materials. Water Infrastructures - module
- Types of transportation infrastructures and their general technical characteristics (8 h) - Organization of infrastructure networks, identification of mobility demand, quantification and analysis of the supply in terms of capacity and quality of service (6h) - Characteristics of the driver-moving entity-infrastructure-environment system and interaction methods (6 h) - Fundamentals of geometric design (32 h) - Basic physical properties of construction materials and basics of structural design (18 h)
Roads, Railways and Airports – module Lesson topic will be followed by exercise sessions aimed at learning calculation methods and acquiring orders of magnitude. Each student is required to autonomously work for the purpose of drafting an exercise report that will be presented during the examination. Water Infrastructures - module
This module is organized in lectures in class followed by tutorial sessions aimed at learning calculation methods.

Lecture slides; Lecture notes;
Modalità di esame: Prova scritta (in aula); Prova orale obbligatoria;
Exam: Written test; Compulsory oral exam;
... The written test will be composed of closed-answer tests and exercises to attest the ability of students to apply the concepts objective of the course. The oral exam will be dedicated to verify the knowledge acquired from theoretical lectures. The final grade will derive from the average between the written and the oral part. To pass the exam it is necessary to reach a sufficient grade for both the written and the oral part of the exam.
Exam: Written test; Compulsory oral exam;
Final score: The final score will derive from the weighted mean with respect to the number of credits of the two modules (7 CFU for Roads, Railways and Airports and 5 CFU for Water Infrastructures ). For Roads, Railways and Airports, the written test will be composed of multiple choice questions and exercises to attest the ability of students to apply the concepts that are objective of the course. The duration of the written test is 1 hour. The oral exam will be dedicated to the discussion of the written exam, to the verification of the exercise report and to verify the knowledge acquired from theoretical lectures. The score of this module will derive from the average between the written and the oral part. To pass the exam it is necessary to reach a sufficient score for both the written and the oral part of the exam (score >18/30). The use of didactic material (such as books, slides, course notes) is not allowed during the exam.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
