Industry 5.0 seeks to augment human sustainability and well-being by integrating emerging technologies with ergonomic design principles. This transformation towards a sustainable, human-centered and resilient industry responds to global challenges such as workforce shortages and the urgency of climate action.
Engineers working in industrial manufacturing and technological innovation are responsible for leading this transformation and the integration of human skills into technological manufacturing environments, promoting a human-centered approach that emphasizes collaboration, resilience, and sustainability.
In this contest, the course provides knowledge on industrial ergonomics, emphasizing how the “human centered” design of manufacturing processes and operation management may promote worker's well-being and system productivity.
The course also addresses how the recent changes in technology and production systems carry the potential to relieve the human worker from physically demanding tasks but may introduce new risk factors that need to be carefully considered by industrial engineers.

Exam: Compulsory oral exam;
Exam Type for the course 01SROMU: written test; lab test; oral test.
The exam of the course 01SROMU consists of two parts: a first examination on "Product Process innovation" ("Innovation" hereafter) and a subsequent examination on "Ergonomics for manufacturing processes" ("Ergonomics" hereafter).
To access the exam of “Ergonomics”, it is necessary to have passed (min. 18/30) the exam of "Innovation".
The final score will be the mean of the marks of the “innovation” and "Ergonomics" exams.
The students can keep the mark of “Innovation” only for one examination session. In case the student does not pass the exam of “Ergonomics” in the same session, she/he will have to repeat both exams in the next exam session.
The exam of "Innovation" consists of:
- The analysis and simulation of a manufacturing line using a discrete-event simulation software tool.( max evaluation 8)
- The written test of Process innovation assesses the knowledge and skills acquired during the course through exercises and theoretical questions. (max evaluation 22)
The final mark of the “Innovation” exam will be the sum of the mark in the lab test and written test; If the sum will be less than 18 the students will have to repeat both lab and written tests.
During the exam the students are allowed to use the course reference books.
The exam of "Ergonomics" consists in an oral colloquium lasting around 30-45 minutes. The questions, on average of three, will aim at ascertaining the understanding of the basic ergonomic principles applied to the design and management of human-centered work systems and the ability to identify and use the appropriate methodologies for the integration of ergonomics in the planning and control of work cycles. A first oral question will deal specifically with the computation of the risk index in a case study, of a type similar to that of the examples discussed in class during the tutorials, and will require the development of calculations by the student.
The evaluation of the oral colloquium takes into account the ability to identify the appropriate methodologies to solve the problems posed and to apply the tools illustrated in the course
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
