ING-INF/03 8 F - Altre attività (art. 10) Abilità informatiche e telematiche
2026/27
This course aims to give its students a system level knowledge of in-vehicle information systems, of standards and applicability of wireless communication systems, and a good knowledge of geo-localization systems and their performance, as well as of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I)
This course aims to give students a system level knowledge of in-vehicle data communication networks, of standards and applicability of wireless communication systems, and of the most relevant network technologies for connected and automated vehicles, which include connected vehicles’ services and connected vehicles’ functions. The course starts with an overview on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and wireless networks, which represent the main pillar for the next generation of Cooperative, Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM). Indeed, vehicles are no longer purely mechanical systems. Electronic Control Units (ECUs), distributed in the vehicle body, implement a wide range of functions, ranging from vehicle dynamic control (ABS, ASD, ESP,...) to driver assistance, safety functions, vehicle automation, to entertainment and digital information. The complexity of these functions is steadily increasing and un the coming years they will more widely rely on wireless communication services to provide their services. In this fast changing scenario, communication systems for vehicles assume a pivotal role. Then, the most relevant protocols for in-vehicle (CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet) and inter-vehicle (DSRC, C-V2X) communications will be presented, with a focus on the communication between vehicle to infrastructure and vehicle to vehicle. The course will also present the basics of network simulation tools, which represent a key enabler for testing in advance safety-critical and large scale use cases for connected and automated mobility. Part of the course will be dedicated to a laboratory activity in which students, in groups, will use a connected vehicle simulator to gain hands-on experience on standard-compliant wireless communication systems based on Wi-Fi, and on how different communication parameters affect the performance of the network. Part of the course will also be dedicated to connected vehicle use cases and enablers, with a group discussion and presentation. This part of the course will be highly interactive and will be aimed at discussing and identifying solutions to technical challenges that arise with the most recent technologies and use cases for CCAM.
Understanding of wireless communication systems for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications. Understanding of geo-localization systems (GPS, GALILEO) and their performance. Understanding of drive assistants (radar, ultra sound, cameras, laser) and their performance. Ability to combine knowledge from the above mentioned subjects and from previous courses to address technical problems in vehicles of any kind (cars, moving bots, autonomous vehicles,...)
The students, at the end of the course, will have sufficient knowledge of: - Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and use cases - in-vehicle networks and protocols - wireless communication systems for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications, both Wi-Fi-based and cellular-based - open simulation platforms and tools to analyze inter-vehicle connectivity - geo-localization systems and technologies - connected vehicles’ enablers, use cases and solutions to technical challenges
Knowledge of computer networks and in-vehicle wired networks (from Electric and electronic systems in vehicles).
There are no strong pre-requirements. However, it is beneficial to have some basics on the following topics: - architecture of computer-based systems - basic notions on networking - elementary knowledge on how to program and write code
Introduction. Radio communication systems: cellular networks (2G, 3G, 4G) and Wireless LANs (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n) Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications: standards and rules, toll systems (Telepass and ETSI compliant systems) Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication: standards and rules, IEEE 802.11 wireless systems and their application to V2V communication. Interconnection of portable devices to vehicle: Bluetooth. Geo-localization (GPS, GALILEO): principles of operation, performance, applications in vehicles. Driving aids: infrared vision systems, anti-collision radar, proximity sensors. Infomobility systems: structure, objectives, examples.
- Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) - Fundamentals of communication networks and wireless communication - Evolution of vehicle networks - In-Vehicle data networks: CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet - Radio communication systems for vehicles: Wi-Fi-based and cellular-based - The ETSI C-ITS standards for vehicular communications - Introduction to navigation and localization protocols (GPS, GALILEO) - Discrete network simulation and simulation tools for connected vehicles - Group discussion of use cases and solutions to technical challenges in CCAM
This course is fully based on lectures. Discussions about some selected subjects will be done during classes.
This course is mostly based on lectures. Discussions and exercises on some selected subjects will be done during classes. A practical simulation activity will also be proposed to students. To carry on the activity, students will be organized in groups. Additionally, part of the course will be dedicated to the focused discussion of relevant themes related to connected vehicles, in which groups of students will select relevant use cases and will identify feasible solutions, preparing a final presentation which will be given during the last lecture of the course.
Lecture's slides and other material available in the course website.
Lecture slides and other materials will be made available on Portale della Didattica.

Modalita di esame: Prova scritta (in aula); Elaborato progettuale in gruppo;
Exam: Written test; Group project;
... Students will be asked to propose a solution to address a technical problem related to the subjects presented in classes. Examples: identify the required performance figures of a geo-localization system to control the movement of an unmanned vehicle; identify a sensor set able to provide a moving bot the necessary information to move inside a building along with humans;
Exam: Written test; Group project;
Written exam. The purpose of the written exam is to evaluate the understanding of the course topics and verify that students have met the expected learning outcomes. The exam is a closed-book exam; the use of books, slides, or any external materials will not be allowed. The exam lasts 1 hour and is composed of 3 questions on ITS, vehicular communication and/or localization, that can yield up to 21 points (6 to 8 points each). Then, up to 7 points will be given following a group presentation of an identified relevant use case for CCAM and identified solutions to its technical challenges. Finally, up to 4 additional points will be given following a short discussion of the laboratory activity, which will take place during or right after the last lecture dedicated to this activity.
In addition to the message sent by the online system, students with disabilities or Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) are invited to directly inform the professor in charge of the course about the special arrangements for the exam that have been agreed with the Special Needs Unit. The professor has to be informed at least one week before the beginning of the examination session in order to provide students with the most suitable arrangements for each specific type of exam.
