Objectives of the course
Goal of this teaching unit is to give a basic knowledge on the structure of analog and digital communication systems.

Expected skills
The student will be able to design a simple telecommunication system, both analog and digital.

Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of calculus, linear algebra, probability theory, stochastic processes, circuit theory, analog signal theory.

Syllabus
 Thermal noise (Equivalent temperature and noise figure)
 Baseband analog transmission  Analog modulations (DSB, AM, FM): transmitter and receiver structures, signal to noise ratio at the receiver output, bandwidth requirements.  PCM: system structure, signal to quantization noise ratio.  Digital modulations (OOK, PAM, QAM, PSK, FSK): transmitter and receiver structures, exact and approximate error probability evaluation (union bound), bandwidth efficiency. 
Laboratories and/or exercises
Theory and practice classes will alternate. No labs are foreseen.
