Objectives of the course
Goal of this teaching unit is to give a basic knowledge on the structure of analog and digital communication systems.
Expected skills
The student will be able to design a simple telecommunication system, both analog and digital.
Basic knowledge of calculus, linear algebra, probability theory, stochastic processes, circuit theory, analog signal theory.
- Thermal noise (Equivalent temperature and noise figure)
- Baseband analog transmission
- Analog modulations (DSB, AM, FM): transmitter and receiver structures, signal to noise ratio at the receiver output, bandwidth requirements.
- PCM: system structure, signal to quantization noise ratio.
- Digital modulations (OOK, PAM, QAM, PSK, FSK): transmitter and receiver structures, exact and approximate error probability evaluation (union bound), bandwidth efficiency.
Laboratories and/or exercises
Theory and practice classes will alternate. No labs are foreseen.
