Objectives of the course
The course will provide the basic knowledge related to the design and analysis of digital circuits and systems for analog to digital and digital to analog conversion.
Expected skills
At the end of the course, the student will know the main issues related to digital circuits and conversion systems; he will also be able to design simple digital circuits, exploiting proper CAD tools for the simulation, synthesis and verification.
The course requires a basic knowledge of circuit analysis and electronic technology and systems.
1. General features of digital circuits:
o Logic levels and noise margins
o Fanout and currents
o Dymanic behaviour
o Power dissipation
o Open collector and three state stages
o Logic families
o Interfacing between different logic families
2. Logic circuits:
o Combinational circuits
o Sequential circuits
3. Datapath:
o Datapath elements
o Hardwired control
o Microprogram control
4. PLD and FPGA design
- design entry and constraints
- simulation
- logic synthesis logica, place and route
- timing analysis and device programming
5) Bus, interconnects and protocols:
- synchronous and semi-synchronous protocols
- asynchronous protocols
- arbiters. metastability
6) Conversion systems:
- architecture of a conversio system
- conditioning and filtering stages
- AD and DA conversion circuits
- S&H circuits
- sigma-delta converters
Laboratories and/or exercises
Numerical exercises will help understanding analysis and design methods; Laboratory assignments will imply the use of CAD tools for the design of digital circuits. Simple projects will be tested on FPGA boards.
