Objectives of the course
The aim of the course is to give to the student the basis of applied mechanics considering both basic physical principles and applications.
The module is mainly devoted to the study of kinematics, dynamics, friction, power transmission components and vibrations.
Kinematics: plane kinematics, plane kinematics of rigid bodies, kinematic pairs, rolling supports, cams, kinematics of relative motions, kinematics of mechanism for industrial automation.
Dynamics: force, moment and couple, equilibrium, free body diagram, general dynamics equations, work and kinetic energy, impulse and momentum, momentum and angular momentum conservation, dynamic actions on rotating elements.
Friction: types of friction, dry friction (static and kinetic friction), rolling resistance, journal bearings (friction circle).
Power transmission components: shafts, couplings and universal joints, rolling and sliding bearings, clutches and brakes, gears, flexible belts, roller chains.
Vibrations: free vibration of particles (undumped, dumped), natural frequency, damping factor, forced vibration of particles, steady-state solution, amplitude ratio and phase angle. Accelerometer and displacement meter. Vibration of rigid bodies (1 dof systems).
