Objectives of the course
The module introduces basic concepts of computer graphics and multimedia. Computer graphics architectures and peripheral devices will be presented, too. Laboratories will be aimed to introduce students to Open GL programming in order to design and implement an application for entertainment.
Syllabus
Introduction and main applications.
The human visual system. Spatial and temporal resolution. The clues for 3D perception.
Intensity and colour perception. Colour models.
2D and 3D transformations. Homogeneous coordinates. Planar projections.
Representation of curves, surfaces, solids.
Simple shading models. Interpolative shading. Determining visible surfaces.
Advanced shading techniques. Shades. 2D and 3D textures. Bump mapping.
Photorealism. Global shading techniques: ray tracing, radiosity.
Graphics hardware. The graphics pipeline. Peripherals.
Basics of multimedia.
Graphics routines. Graphics standards. Open GL. Interacting with images.
3D images and virtual reality.
Laboratories and/or exercises
The assignments will concern C++ and Open GL programs
