Objectives of the course
This course is intended to provide the basic knowledge to understand the operation and the usage of the main electric machines.

Expected skills
At the end of the course, the student will be able to compute the operating point of the studied electric machines, starting from the machine ratings and measured parameters and from load data.

Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of electromagnetics, mechanics and dynamics (from courses of Physics), knowledge of electric networks (from the course on Elecric Networks).

Syllabus
Direct Current Electric Machine: construction basics, machine equations, independent and series excitation, speedtorque characteristic, startup and control.
Single Phase Transformer: ideal transformer, equivalent circuit of the real transformer, noload test and shortcircuit test, computation of parameters for the equivalent circuit, parallel connection. Three Phase Transformer: equivalent circuit, tests for parameter identification on the equivalent circuit, parallel connection, group. Induction Motor: construction basics, principle of operation, equivalent circuit, noload test and shortcircuit test, speedtorque characteristics, startup and control. 
Laboratories and/or exercises
Numeric exercises. Unmounting of small electric machines as construction examples.

The exam consits of a written test based on the subjects of exercises and of questions on the subjects of lectures.
