Objectives of the course
The aim of the course is to present the main mechanical devices, to provide the necessary knowledge relative to their functional analysis and to the dynamic analysis of mechanical systems.
Attention is focused on applications linked with power transmission.
The lectures will provide the methodology for the kinematical and dynamical analysis of transmissions systems, friction devices and bearings.
Expected skills
Ability to analyse the different components and devices used for power transmission and to integrate them into complex mechanical systems.
Skills in designing and analysing the performances of drivelines and engine-load couplings.
Knowledge of the methodology and contents of Physics, Mathematics and Fundamentals of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.
BEARINGS and TRIBOLOGY: ball and thrust bearings; elementary theory of lubrication, hydrodynamic and hydrostatic lubrication, sliding and journal bearings.

MECHANICAL FRICTION COMPONENTS: brakes; friction clutches.

POWER TRANSMISSION COMPONENTS: couplings, elastic and Hook joints; belts; screw-lead screw transmission; gearing transmissions: spur, helical and bevel gears; worm gears; ordinary and epicycle gears; differentials.

ENGINE-LOAD COUPLINGS: mechanical characteristics of the most common engines and machines; direct coupling; coupling with clutches; mechanical transients.
Laboratories and/or exercises
Classroom training aimed at solving problems related to mechanical systems.
Training at test benches: experimental characterizations of reduction gears (ordinary, planetary and worm gears).
