Objectives of the course
The module provides the basic and fundamental ideas of fluid mechanics, regarding both the statics and the dynamics of perfect and
real fluids. Particular attention will be paid to the practical applications and to the engineering aspects.
Expected skills
At the end of the course the student will have acquired the necessary elements for the proportioning of vessels and pipes used to
contain and convey the fluids. Beginning with a theoretical approach, the student will arrive at the practical applications.
Prerequisites
A basis of differential and integral calculus is necessary as well as knowledge of vectorial calculus.
Syllabus
The fluids and their characteristics (0,5 credits)

Definition of fluid; fluids as continuous systems; variables and units of measure of the fluid mechanics, physical properties, flow regimes;
strains within a continuous system.


Statics of fluids (1 credit)

Local equation of the statics of fluids; global equation of the static equilibrium, statics of uncompressible heavy fluids; pressure
measurements;forces on flat surfaces; forces on curved surfaces; forces on immersed bodies; statics of compressible heavy fluids.


Kinematics and Dynamics of fluids (0,5 credits)

Eulerian and Lagrangian approaches; speed and acceleration, motion equations and state equations.


Dynamics of perfect fluids (1 credit)

Variations of piezometric head along the normal, bi-normal and tangent directions to the trajectory, linear currents; Bernoulli's theorem;
application to some outflow processes; extension of the Bernoulli theorem to a current; use of Venturi tubes and nozzles to measure the
capacity in pipes.


Dynamics of real fluids (1,5 credits)

Reynolds' eperience; laminar flow; general characteristics of turbulent flow; uniform turbulent flow: smooth and rough pipes; Moody's
chart, practical formulas. Localized head loss.


Unsteady flow in pipes (0,5 credits)

Water hammer in pressure pipes; water hammer in a pumping system; air boxes.
Laboratories and/or exercises
Exercices and laboratory experience will concern with the subjects developed at lesson; in particular the student will carry out illustrative
exercises and calculations.


The lecturing staff is availble to the students to provide clarifications on the subjects covered during lessons and to also informally verify
the level of learning. The students are divided into two groups.
