Objectives of the course
This course aims to give students the basics of experimental mechanics. Great effort will be devoted to the examination of causes of error in the experimental measurements.
The logical schemes used in designing experimental systems will be examined (analysis of the physical units, measurement chain'). In addition, elements of technical writing to extend a correct technical report of experimental measurements will be addressed.
Expected skills
To acquire basic knowledge on the main experimental techniques in mechanics. To acquire sufficient sensitivity to the main problems and on the possible causes of errors to be able to evaluate the validity of experimental measurements.
Prerequisites
The student aiming to attend the course needs to have got the methods and know-how of the mechanical behavior of materials and of electricity (however, it is not requested to have passed the exams of these courses). Useful too is the knowledge of the applied mechanics and of engineering materials, and of computer science.
Syllabus
1. Experimental techniques for strain analysis: strain gages
2. Experimental methods for the measurement of displacements and forces
3. Statistics for experiments
4. Experimental techniques for the analysis of the dynamics of structures
5. Optical and photo-elasticity methods
Laboratories and/or exercises
Practical applications of the techniques described during the lectures will be proposed in the didactic/experimental laboratory. Topics are:
1. Measurements of displacement and force
2. Strain-gage measurements
3. Dynamic and modal analysis
4. Strain measurements by means of optical methods

Revisions / Exam
The exam is oral. The reports of the experimental activities will be discussed during the examination. However, the oral examination will address all the topics of lectures and practical activities.
