Objectives of the course
The aim of this course is the knowledge of XIX and XX centuries architecture, using manuals and books of critic. Other topics are basic iconography and history.
Expected skills
Skills in critical opinioning, after having studied specific examples, that point out many specific characters of contemporary architecture.
This course requires a good knowledge of XIX and XX centuries hsitory, politics and sociology.
The main object of this course is the study of history of architecture from the end of XVIII to the end of XX centuries. Through lectures and visits to buildings students explore key aspects of the built world. The course approaches architecture as a critical feature in a broader social and cultural context and aims to illuminate the changing meaning of architecture for the people who commission, design, build, use, preserve, and demolish buildings. A good preliminary knowledge of historical, political and social features of XIX and XX centuries is required.
The course will concentrate on the analysis of ten main subjects:
1.Objects and methods of architectural historiography
2. The legacy of XIX century eclecticism
3. Architecture and industrialization
4. Avantgarde and modernity
5. Modernity without avantgarde
Masters of the Modern movement, Le Corbusier, Gropius, Mies, Wright, and Kahn
Post war architectures
The crisis of modernity
Architecture in the post modern era
New scenarios at the turn of the century
