Objectives of the course
To provide a knowledge of the principal assembly and joining procedures used in motor vehicle production. At the end of the course the students will possess the specific abilities necessary to study methods of assembly, including basics for the use of the CAPE simulation methods.
Preliminary formative modules necessary: Applied Mechanics, Vehicle Design, Mechanical technology, Materials and Applied Chemistry.
Classification of joining and assembly tecniques. Application examples. Recall from previous courses. Basics on Body in White shop ( BIW). Basics on Steel and Alminum Sheet Metal Welding. Resistance Welding, Arc- Welding, Laser Welding. Specific characteristic and applications. Parameters and regulation devices
Alternative joining technics:rivetting,clinching,glueing. Main characteristics and specific application Examples
The Body in White (BIW). The various solutions related to the production rate,flexibility in volume and mix,automation level. References and relations to economics, quality,ergonomics,logistics and productivity of the Production System.
Tolerances and management of the Tolerance Chain
The Painting Shop Description of the Painting Cycles. General Lay out and installations (Boots,Ovens') Descriptions of the main defects .
The corrosion problem:analisys and description of the main solutions adopted. Focus on Product and Process.
The tightening Process. Main Strategies adopted. The control of the tightening operations.
The Assembly Shop. Analisys of the main solutions adopted related to the production rate,automation level etc.. etc.. Focus on transportation Systems used. References and Relations to economics,quaqlity,ergonomics and logistics and productivity.
Focus on cables and wire production,assembly and control.
Production and Assembly of interiors. Preassembly and Assembly of Moduls. Preassembly and Assembly of engines and gear boxes
Robots and Robotisation examples and application in the Automotive Production System
Process Simulation analisys and exam of the main technics adopted in BIW and Assembly shop
Laboratories and/or exercises
Exam of simple but representative study cases; visits to factories and representative production systems, exam and comments of technological documents and films. Reports and comments from the students.

The exam consists a written test integrated with an interview and presentation of a Case Study ( Technological Game).
