Objectives of the course
The course follows a top-down approach, providing a structured view of electronic systems, as a collection of modules and their interfaces. Students will learn the principles of analog amplification, feedback technique, operation of logic circuits, and signals in the analog and digital domains.
Prerequisites
Circuit Theory, Laplace and Fourier transforms, calculus, signal theory, Boolean algebra.
Syllabus
This course analyzes a complex electronic system and decomposes it into functional modules. The contents include:
' Course structure and organization, review of prerequisites, functional modules and interfaces (6 hrs + lab)
' Amplifiers, characteristic parameters, models, design specifications, model limitations (distortion, offsets, bandwidth) (6 hrs, + lab)
' Negative feedback, its use in amplifiers using op amps (8 hrs + lab)
' Interface specifications for digital circuits. Logic families, characteristics and electrical interfacing between logic devices (6 hrs + lab)
' Basic sequential elements and structures (8 hrs + lab)
' Analog and digital signals, noise and quantization, voltage comparators. Tradeoffs between parameters of functional blocks and system specifications (speed, power, cost) (8 hrs).
Laboratories and/or exercises
Laboratory experiments are designed to verify the classroom theory, emphasizing model limitations. Lab requires teamwork and writing of lab reports. Most of the measurements are done on preassembled boards.

Revisions / Exam
The final mark is a weighted average of evaluation of lab reports and a written exam.
