Objectives of the course
This course introduces the basic concepts of information theory (applied to channel coding) and digital modulations.
Syllabus
1. Theoretical concepts (mutual information, coding)
2. Capacity of discrete channels (analytic and numerical methods)
3. Capacity of continuous input channels (Gaussian and other)
4. Fading channel models
5. Basics of Hilbert spaces
6. Optimal receiver (demodulation and detection)
7. ML and MAP decision
8. Modulations: PAM and PPM
9. Power spectrum of digital signals
10. Shannon diagram and bound
11. Amplitude and phase modulations (QAM, PSK)
12. FSK modulations
13. Intersymbol interference, Nyquist criterion
14. Raised-cosine signals and matched filters
