Objectives of the course
The unit encompasses fundamentals of mechanics of structures typically part of the classes of Statics and general Mechanics of Structures. The unit is instrumental in creating the knowledge base for modelling simple constructions and checking their basic structural components.
The professor’s office hours will be displayed on the notice board in the Architectural Department. 
Syllabus
1. Basic elements of geometry of areas.
2. Concept of strain and stress in elastic bodies. Elements of Theory of Elasticity. 3. Saint Venant’s principle. Normal stress. Simple bending. Combined compression and bending. Bending and shear stress. Torsion Stress. 4. Combined stress resultants in beams and failure criteria. 5. Buckling. 6. Bending of beams. Elastic curve. 7. Statically indeterminate structures. Examples of statically indeterminate structures: simply supported beams, continuous beams, trusses. Solution methods for statically indeterminate structures and deflection calculations: concept of stiffness and elastic deformability of structures. 8. Solution of statically indeterminate diagrams. Overview of virtual work. Overview of displacement methods. Calculation software. 
Laboratories and/or exercises
Exercises will be undertaken in class by professor and assistants.
