Objectives of the course
This course wants to give students the main technical-engineering skills on cartography, also using some of the most modern technologies;
analysing territorial representation instruments, using cartography; use of modern technologies for management of territorial information, through GIS instruments and urbanistic applications. |
Expected skills
Reading and interpretation of cartography;
Skills in analysing territorial data, through cartographic instruments; Use of CAD/GIS. |
Prerequisites
This course starts "from the beginning", focusing on territorial representation and cartography.

Syllabus
Fundamentals of geodesy: earth shape, meaning of reference surface;
Cartography: representation of an ellipsoid in a plane, main cartographic representations, ufficial Italian cartography, classification; Instruments and methods to measure alges, distances and differences in level; theory of measures; survey; Satellite geodesy: artificial satellites; GPS system; applications; air-photogrammetry; analogical, analitical and digital instruments; Remote sensing: physical concepts, satellite remote sensing (LANDSAT, SPOT, IKONOS, etc); digital elaboration of images; applications; modern cartographic supports: raster maps, vector maps, DTM, digital orthoimages; Regional Technical Numerical Map of Piedmont; Information territorial systems and thematic carthography; IntesaGIS; From drawing to GIS: fundamentals of topology, introduction to GIS, etc. |
Laboratories and/or exercises
Methodology for the survey of topographic quantities and GPS measures;
cartographic analysis. |
