Objectives of the course
The module is divided into lessons and workshops (total about 30 hours).
The aim of the module is to deal with two closely linked subjects: the dynamics of rotating machinery and the theory of hydrodynamic lubrication, which are of fundamental importance in the design of both motor vehicles and of many automotive components.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Basic Mechanics and Applied Mechanics.
Syllabus
Dynamics of rotors: 20 hours
Rotating shafts: Jeffcott model, equation of motion, critical speed.
Asymmetric shafts. Static and dynamic unbalance.
Internal rotating damping.
Model of rotor with bearing stiffness and damping.
Stability of the motion for small and big damping forces.

Theory of hydrodynamic lubrication: 6 hours
Elementary theory of lubrication; finite length pad bearings; cylinder-piston rings couplings.
Laboratories and/or exercises
The training consists in the resolution of problems regarding topics covered in the lectures using Matlab software.
