Objectives of the course
The course aims at describing radiowave propagation usage in transmission and information retrieval techniques for mobile communication applications, Trans European TRunked stAndard for private mobile radio, spread spectrum wireless LAN networks, radio link networks.
Particular focus is given on devices restrictions due to propagation.
Prerequisites
Physics, Basics on electromagnetism.
Syllabus
1. FREQUENCY BANDS USAGE
2. GEOMETRIC OPTICS AND TROPOSPHERIC PROPAGATION OVERVIEW
Earth atmosphere refraction index, Refractivity and Equivalent Earth curvature radius.
Tropospheric Ducting, Rainfall and fog propagation.
Fresnel Zones and propagation with obstacle presence.
3. APPLICATIONS
Urban areas and not-builded areas propagation and radioelcetric covering; particular focus on TETRA frequencies, GSM frequencies, UMTS frequencies, TV broadcasting frequencies, wireless LAN networks frequencies.
Satellite link propagation problems..
Laboratories and/or exercises
Radioelectric covering measurements using a mobile laboratory and its estimation using GIS numerical simuators.
Revisions / Exam
written examination, oral examination optional
