Objectives of the course
The course is devoted to a presentation of the physical and technological bases for the obtainment of low-pressure and low-temperature environments useful both in research and in industrial applications. The main equipments, as well as the most innovative solutions for obtaining pressures down ultra-high vacuum and temperatures down to few micro Kelvin, are discussed in detail.
Prerequisites
Physics, Fundamentals of matter structure, Advanced physics laboratory.
Syllabus
Ideal gas, interaction gas-surfaces, theory of pumping processes, theory of gas flow.
Pumping systems (mechanical pumps, impulse pump, capture pumps) and vacuum systems.
Pressure measurements: measurement of total pressure and measurement of partial pressure.
Thermodynamics of refrigeration: Cooling cycles and machines, enthalpy and Joule-Kelvin effect, gas liquefaction. Heat exchangers, He liquefiers, cryocoolers with pulsed flux (Stirling, Gifford-Mc Mahon, pulse tube).
Physical properties of cryoliquids (particularly 4He and 3He), thermal contact and thermal isolation (with examples), heat switches, Kapitza thermal resistance.
Helium-4 cryostats, Helium-3 cryostats, 3He - 4He dilution refrigerators, Adiabatic demagnetization of paramagnetic salts and adiabatic nuclear demagnetization, Low-temperature thermometry.
