Subject fundamentals
The fundamentals required to analyse the vehicle dynamics are presented. For this purpose, basics concerning chassis design are presented by analysing the main functional characteristics of tires, braking system, transmissions and driveline, suspensions and steering. Fundamentals on aerodynamics are introduced. Some functional mathematical models are proposed to investigate the vehicle dynamics depending on the operating conditions like, e.g., driver inputs and road characteristics. The main objectives regarding the vehicle dynamics performance evaluation are concerning handling and safety.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will acquire the knowledge in the following fields:
- Main factors influencing the vehicle handling, driveability and safety;
- Tires and chassis (braking system, transmission, suspension and steering);
- Main characteristics required to setup the vehicle to obtain a desired stationary and transient behaviour
- Mathematical models and experimental tests;
- Potentialities to analyse the vehicle dynamics performance.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Skills to approach the study of the dynamic behaviour of mechanical systems like basic tools of differential and integral calculus, Mechanics, Technical design
